DOCUMENTARY: “Rape for Who I Am*” (Lovinsa Kavuma, 2006)
Extremely sensitive documentary that chronicles the fears and homophobic experiences of a group of black South African lesbians who live in townships in Johannesburg.
Despite South Africa having one of the most progressive constitutions in the world with a clause that protects LGBTQI individuals from discrimination of any kind, there is no specific law that protects victims of hate crimes and therefore, growing incidents of sexual violence against individuals who are seen as sexual and gender ‘deviants’ largely go unreported or find any support within the criminal justice system.
TW: Sexual violence, mentions of rape, domestic violence, gender discrimination, homophobia, HIV/AIDS-related stigma.
